SOUL OF CITIES

Sacred Ecology: Within and Around

Start Date: 5. November 2025

Start Time: 15:00 CET

End Time: 17:00 CET

“Sacred Ecology: Within & Around” treats personal wellbeing, social coherence, and ecological regeneration as one fabric. The discussion brings the inner ecology (how we regulate attention, emotion, meaning, vitality) into a deliberate relationship with the outer ecology (how living systems actually work - open, self-organising, sustained by flows; and how our human interactions shape those systems). Addressing these topics together is essential because fragmentation (“silos”) obscures how the inner state drives outer conduct, policy, and culture - and vice-versa.

It is timely because our institutions and nervous systems are stretched by unpredictability; the mechanistic “predict-and-control” stance proves brittle, while leaders and communities benefit from sense-and-respond capacities grounded in embodied awareness. Chronic “high-beta” stress degrades decision quality; integrating head–heart–gut (and action/energy) restores the calm-alert responsiveness that living systems demand.

It is also timely because a wider intellectual shift is underway - from physics-style linear metaphors to biology-shaped views of evolution, seasonality, and flow. This reframing invites us to align development with natural cycles, connect food and microbiomes to land stewardship, and validate lived/Indigenous ways alongside measurement. The through-line is simple and rigorous: inner development for outer change.

Summary

Theme: Sacred Ecology: Within & Around — reweaving inner development and living systems; cities as living, relational organisms grounded in interbeing and nested ecologies.

Research Basis: Interbeing + living-systems science; Ubuntu and Indigenous/lived wisdom; vertical development with the Inner Development Goals; embodied intelligence via the five knowledge centers (head–heart–gut–hands–vital energy).

Thematic Action Ideas: Sacred opening/attunement practice; awe micro-interventions; five-center somatic check-ins; co-sensing/closing circle; regenerative place-making and “designing for and with life.”

Key Question: How do Indigenous, spiritual, developmental, and embodied ecologies converge; what shifts when we see the city as a living organism (not a mechanism); and what practices sustain coherence between personal soul and the soul of place?

Expected Outcomes: A shared frame that makes the relational field visible; leadership/design principles aligned with living systems; practical examples and commitments to place-based prototypes that cultivate the soul of the city.
