The 22nd seminar of the “Water for Peace and Climate Change in Myanmar (2024–2025)” will be held on 30 May 2025, marking the continuation of a year-long journey of collective learning and dialogue. The previous 21 seminars have addressed a wide diversity of water-related topics—from water science and technological innovation to governance, IWRM, WASH, DRR, gender mainstreaming, hydroinformatics, and inclusive decision-making.
Discussions have also explored leadership transformation, emergency preparedness, policy development, and the vital role of social sciences in shaping sustainable water futures. Full records are available on the
Myanmar Water Academy website.
These seminars are generating tangible impacts across all levels within Myanmar, with ripple effects extending beyond its borders. Since the early 2000s, Myanmar’s water professionals— from young graduates to seasoned experts—have been advancing interdisciplinary approaches in partnership with GWP Stockholm and GWP-SEA, working through rotating ASEAN secretariats.
As Myanmar continues its IWRM journey, we are now reimagining the Myanmar Water
Partnership with a renewed perspective—one that serves not only Myanmar but also contributes
to Southeast Asia, the Asia-Pacific region, and the global water community.
In this context, two key organisations deserve special mention for their unwavering support to
Myanmar, through both calm and crisis:
- Global Water Partnership (GWP) – A long-standing ally in water governance, GWP is
now spearheading a Global Transformation Agenda to reshape global cooperation. This
initiative aims to scale up climate-resilient water investments, targeting USD 15 billion
by 2030, beginning with an initial USD 500 million. For the first time in over two
decades, GWP’s intergovernmental MoU is open to new states and governments—a
historic opportunity to co-lead a global alliance for water security and climate resilience. - Ecocivilisation – A visionary movement and global platform for systemic transformation,
Ecocivilisation promotes a shift from ego-centric to eco-centric thinking. It envisions a
future rooted in harmony among people, nature, and technology, offering a new narrative
for collaboration across generations, cultures, and sectors. By integrating ethics, empathy,
and ecological wisdom into leadership and development, Ecocivilisation aligns closely
with water resilience efforts—reaffirming that a peaceful, sustainable world begins with
how we care for water, and for one another.
If Myanmar is to respond to this global call, we must commit to the following five urgent priority
actions:
- Co-create a Shared Vision and Language
- Build Trust through Transparent and Continuous Communication
- Harness Diverse Knowledge Systems (Indigenous, Scientific, Local)
- Innovate Governance Models with Flexible, Polycentric Approaches
- Link Water Resilience to Broader Agendas (Climate, Health, Equity)
